Lizard FAQ’s

We are current creating a list of lizard frequently asked questions to answer some of the more common queries. Here as some of the most asked.

Can anyone care for lizards?

If a lizard is a pet that you really want then a great deal of reading is available. We do advise very strongly that you read as much information as humanly possible. If everyone read books on their animals then there would be no need for cruelty or recklessness.

What type of lizard would you recommend as I am just starting out?

The best lizard to begin with is a Leopard Gecko. They are by far the easiest to keep. One leopard gecko will require 3 x 2 foot Vivarium, heat bulb, a heat mat, somewhere to hide away, a good accessible water dish and substrate.

How Much Will A Vivarium cost ?

A beginner can start up for as little as £60 then add the cost of your baby and hey presto a nice little viv set up that wont need to extend. If you want more leopards then obviously the viv shall have to get larger.

Which substrate is best?

This is an age-old question that has lots of answers. Spagnum Moss, Wood Based cat litter, sand, newspaper, wood shavings, kitchen roll, bark chips, Astroturf, the list goes on and on. At Pontefract Lizard Rescue we always use wood based cat litter pellets. This is the best substrate in our eyes, its clean and smells it, it looks nice and fairly natural. We would never advise using any type of sand as this causes impactation. This is when sand is eaten by the lizard, mostly unavoidably, it then settles in their stomachs causing a blockage and then death. For young lizards we use kitchen roll as a substrate because it's easier to clean and less expensive that wood based cat litter, young lizards need more cleaning. They don't mind the flowers if you don't.

What If my lizard falls Ill?

Before you purchase any lizard you should make sure you have a
reputable vet to call in any situation. This can be found in yellow pages, etc..

"I've just bought a leopard gecko, do I need a UV light"?

No, you won't  need a UV light because Leopard Geckos are nocturnal animals so have no need for UV rays (bulds). You can give your " Leo" vitamin D3 which comes in most vitamin supplements such as Nutrobal, it's a well known favorite among reptile keepers.

Where do I buy a reptile from and all its equipment ?.

There are a few reptile stockists in and around England, there you will find everything for your reptiles needs, you can also purchase your reptile from there,

What do I feed my lizard and where do I buy food from?

There are two main types of lizard, Herbivores and Carnivores.
A common herbivore is the Iguana (IGUANA IGUANA) Herbivores eat vegetables, plants, leaves, flowers, etc.
A common carnivore is the Leopard Gecko (EUBLEPHARIS MACULARIUS). Carnivores eat crickets, locusts, pinkies etc.
Iguanas will eat small crickets when young. And Bearded Dragons will eat small amounts of veg whilst they are adults as an added bonus to their diet. Not instead of crickets you understand.  The vegetables are as follows apple, blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit,   honeydew melon, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries, strawberries, orange, banana, avocado, carrot, broccoli, beans, squash, green cabbage, lettuce, all of which are readily available at local supermarkets.  You will find crickets in brown or black and very small, small, medium and large sizes, meal worms and giant meal worms, wax worms, locusts and giant locusts, pinkies/day old mice. These are available from any local pet shop who stock reptiles sometimes a pet shop will order food stock in for you if they do not stock reptiles.

How did you first get into lizards?

I got my first lizard when I was twelve a friend of mine had one and I liked it so I decided to find out more about them after about six months of reading and begging to my mam and dad they bought me one for my birthday and I've had them ever since.

Why reptiles and not mammals?

Well its all down to taste at the end of the day, some people like dogs some like hamsters and us we love reps, plus there is a great knowledge to be found, even to experts. We are all still learning and will probably do so until our last days.
